QUIZ answers

The answers to my little POLL-QUIZ are finally in. It's not too late to "vote".
  1. "The restorer just returned it," his grandmother said. "Doesn't it look beautiful with all those rich colors that we couldn't see under the grime?" [1/7 votes said NOT a PB.]
  2. "Maybe it was a giant spider with eight hairy legs," Jeff said with a straight face. [1/7 votes said NOT a PB.]
  3. "More than just you and me! Tonight is Family fun Night, and I bet I'll be the only kid in the whole class bringing just one person. What kind of a family is that?"  [2/7 votes said NOT a PB.]
  4. "Never mind," she said. "Archy, will you please go to the Mercantile and buy me a ledger? I'll start my own docket."  [3/7 votes said NOT a PB.]
  1. Yes a PB.
    • Ghost Ship: A Cape Cod Story by Mary Higgins Clark
    • Simon & Schuster, 2007
  2. NO - this is a chapter book.
    • Ghostville Elementary series, #1: Ghost Class by Marcia T. Jones
    • Scholastic, 2002
  3. Yes a PB.
    • Love is a Family by Roma Downey
    • HarperCollins, 2001
  4. Yes a PB.
    • I Could Do That! by Linda Arms White
    • Farrar Strauss Giroux, 2005
I find it very interesting that the non picture book excerpt only got one vote. I wonder if that's because I purposefully tried to make it difficult, or because chapter books tend to use "gentler" language so the readers can actually read the words.

Remember, picture books are meant to be read aloud. Picture books have pictures that tell half the story. It's okay if kids don't know all the words. We adults usually read picture books TO the children. It's okay to stretch their vocabulary.

  1. I wish I would have seen this poll before I read the answers. I am astonished that the non picture book only got one vote too. Chapter books are meant to be read by the kids themselves and as you said, picture books are read by us and the kidlets look at the illustrations. *waving* from NC. :-)

  2. That's a really interesting point about PB vs chapter books. The language of chapters books almost have to be simpler than that of PBs, depending on the age the PB is geared toward.

  3. I agree. Picture books are the perfect opportunity to expand vocabulary and even other languages to the hungry minds of kiddos!!
